entry #0 (if q_ent_cdone)
*Two green lights open in the bark, and this time they open quickly.* Hoom, hom -- the one who woke me. I am still awake, root-friend, and I will be for an age yet. Go carefully in my wood.
Sleep lightly, Leaflock.
entry #1 (if q_ent_cdru)
*What you took for a tree is not a tree. Bark cracks like an old door, and two green lights open in the knot of its face.* Hoom... hom. Twelve of us still walk in Fangorn. I am the thirteenth, and I have been standing a very long while. Root-sleep is warm, little druid, and I have nearly forgotten my own name. Hoo -- but there is one taste that wakes me. The truffles of the deep loam. They hide from eyes and from hands; only a boar's nose has ever found one. Bring me a truffle with the earth-smell still on it, and set the Balance of green things about my roots, and I will remember who I am.
I will find your truffle, Leaflock.
entry #5
*Leaflock's voice slows to a creak.* Wear the boar, then. Go on four feet among my roots and snuff the loam -- what is hidden will show itself to a snout and to nothing else in the world. And do not dawdle. A truffle out of the earth dies quickly, and a dead truffle wakes nobody. Come back to me with it, put off the beast-shape, and sing the Balance of Nature over my roots -- close, mind. My hearing is all in my bark.
*go, on four feet*
reply #2
Not today, old one.
entry #2 (if q_ent_cbrd)
*Two green lights open slowly in the bark.* Hoom... a singer. It has been an age of the world since anything sang in this wood that was not the wind. I am the thirteenth Ent of Fangorn, and I have stood so long that my own name has gone down into my roots after the water. Play me awake, singer. Twice: once to bring me up out of the root-sleep, and once more to bring me back my name. But do not hurry me -- nothing good is ever said in a hurry -- and do not play falsely. If you do, I will go down again, and I will not come up for a day and a night.
Then I will play for you.
entry #6
*The green lights half-close.* Begin when I stir, and not before. Watch my bark, singer -- I will tell you when. Hoom... and know your matter as well as your music. I will be listening to both.
*take up the instrument and wait for the cue*
reply #4
Another time, when my voice is rested.
entry #3 (if q_ent_ccd)
*The bark has closed over. Somewhere far inside the trunk there is a slow, sleeping creak, and nothing else.* Hoom... no. Not again so soon. Come back in <CUSTOM6390>, and bring more patience with you.
I will come back.
entry #4
*A vast old tree, bark grown over bark, moss to the shoulder. For a moment you would swear there was a face in the knots of it -- eyes shut, mouth shut, sunk deep in a sleep that has lasted longer than your people have had names. Nothing you say reaches it.*
reply #6
*leave the old tree in peace*
