Customizations — Homer's LOTR

This module runs on stock Neverwinter Nights rules (plus CEP 2 content), but a number of spells, mechanics, and whole systems have been deliberately changed. These pages are the full reference for what has — and has not — been modified relative to a vanilla NWN game, drawn directly from the module's scripts. A short, in-game version lives in your journal under Server Info → Module Customizations.

Search below — it looks through the full text of every section, not just the titles — or browse by topic.

Looks Like a Bug — Isn't

Looks Like a Bug — Isn't

A handful of things on this server look broken the first time you meet them and are working exactly as intended. If one of these just happened to you, you are not the first — follow the link for the full explanation.

Notable Custom Systems

Larger persistent systems layered on top of the base game — the things you will interact with most.

Appraise & Selling to Merchants

A high Appraise skill raises the maximum gold a merchant will pay you for an item. Many shops cap how much they will hand over for any single piece; Appraise lifts that cap for you specifically — up to double (+100%) at…

Banking & Family Accounts

Bank NPCs (in Bree, Minas Tirith, and elsewhere) let you deposit and withdraw gold and XP. Beyond a personal balance, a family account is shared across every character on your account, so you can pool gold and pass…

Merit Reward System

You earn merit points when your reported bugs get fixed, your reported exploits get closed, or your suggested features ship — defects are worth 1, features 2, and exploits 3. Points are tracked per account and never…

MeaningWave Philosopher Guides

Eight philosopher NPCs are scattered across Middle-earth. Answer each one's questions to unlock them as a powerful summonable companion that persists between sessions. See the dedicated MeaningWave: A Guide to the…

Instant Resting & the Rest Menu

Resting is fully custom. There is no rest cooldown — you can rest whenever you are not in active combat, and each rest is an instant full rest (HP and spells restored immediately, no waiting). Resting opens a custom…

Party Loot Rolls

When you pick up a valuable item and other party members are in the same area, a clickable Need / Greed / Pass window pops up for everyone in the party — a fair way to decide who gets the drop, with no out-of-character…

Boss Respawn Tracker — the Roll of the Fallen

A billboard in the Well of Eru (next to the Recent Updates sign) that shows which of Middle-earth's great powers are currently slain and when each will walk again — so you can plan a boss run instead of hiking to an…

Boss Enrage on Retreat

Retreating from a great boss makes it stronger. Disengage from one of the Roll of the Fallen bosses and it will taunt you by name, grow in power, and claw back part of the damage you had done. This applies only to those…

Caster Signature Gear

A planned line of boss-drop gear that boosts specific spells, giving Clerics, Druids, Sorcerers, and Wizards a real way to threaten high-tier bosses instead of relying on damage shields and lucky epic-spell rolls. Each…

Dungeon Solitaire

A custom card-game-style encounter arena: a sequence of drawn challenges with its own creatures and dialogue, distinct from the open-world encounter zones. It is an in-game port of Dungeon Solitaire — which can also be…

Pipe-Weed & the Smoking Chamber

Through the door at the Well of Eru lies the Smoking Chamber, a low room of cushions and water pipes. Bring a pouch of Shire leaf, use a pipe, and the smoke settles on you for one full hour of real time.

Appearance & Crafting

Free cosmetic changes to your character and gear, plus paid enchanting at the Forge of Wonders.

Player Appearance & Alignment

Visit the Appearance Changer and Character Modifying Area in Bree to open an appearance menu with 315+ creature forms. The change is free and permanent until you change it again.

Item Appearance Crafting

Armor, cloak, shield and weapon appearance can be remodelled with the CEP crafting system (the Craft Armor / Craft Weapon options). There is no fail chance — every appearance change succeeds automatically, regardless of…

Dye Studio — Recolour Your Gear

The Dye Studio is a point-and-click colour picker for your armor, helmet and cloak. It's free, instant, and can't fail, every colour is previewed live on your character, and dyeing never changes an item's stats.

Weapon Renaming — Engraver's Chisel

The Engraver's Chisel lets you give your weapon a name of your own — turn Longsword +5 into Goblin-Cleaver or Sting. Renaming is purely cosmetic: it never changes an item's stats, and the new name is saved on the item…

Forge of Wonders — Item Enchanting

Four Forge of Wonders locations let you permanently add or replace magical properties on any equippable item, for a gold cost equal to the increase in the item's assessed value. Each forge is staffed by a smith NPC.…

Disenchanting — what the forge will and won't strike

Every forge smith offers "Strip an enchantment from the item on the anvil". You plan the removals first: click as many listed properties as you like to mark them [planned], and the smith shows what the item would be…

Custom Gameplay Items

Items that add mechanics the base game does not have, and items that work differently from stock.

Rod of Fast Buffing

Sold at the Well-Mart at the Well of Eru, the Rod of Fast Buffing lets casters batch their pre-combat buffs into a single action:

Rod of Fast Lore

Also sold at the Well-Mart, the Rod of Fast Lore identifies a whole inventory at once instead of one item at a time:

Bigger Stacks

Ammunition, potions and scrolls stack much higher than in stock NWN, so your pack and quickbar fill up far more slowly.

Good/Evil Faction

The module's in-game faction system is entirely separate from your character's D&D alignment.

Overview

Two player-facing factions govern which NPCs are hostile to you as you travel Middle-earth: Good (Gondor, Rivendell, Lothlórien, Helm's Deep, Edoras, …) and Evil (Mordor, Isengard, Cirith Ungol, Carn Dûm, …). See the…

Choosing Your Side in the Well of Eru

Each time you are about to leave the Well of Eru through one of the teleporters, click one of the two orbs to set your faction for the session:

Your Side Changes Which Encounters Spawn

Roaming encounters (the ambushes that appear as you travel, as opposed to NPCs standing where they are placed) are tied to a faction, and an encounter only fires for travellers that faction treats as an enemy. Most of…

Spell Changes

Player-cast spells and effects last twice as long, epic spells are dramatically stronger than stock NWN, a few utility spells are re-tuned, and one is disabled outright.

Epic Spell Enhancements

The epic spells have been rebuilt to feel genuinely epic. Several summon and ward effects cannot be dispelled.

Curse Song Ladder (Bard)

Curse Song is a ladder of 23 tiers, not a single formula. You reach a tier only when you meet both its Perform-skill rank and its Bard-level requirement; the song then applies every penalty on that row to enemies in a…

Bard Song Ladder (Bard)

Stock Bard Song stopped scaling at Bard 20 and gave only modest bonuses. Here it is the mirror of Curse Song — a ladder of 23 tiers reached only when you meet both its Perform rank and its Bard level, granting every…

Shapeshifting: Full Equipment Merge

Every player polymorph now merges all of your equipped items' magical properties into the new form — stock NWN merged only a per-form subset (druid Wild Shape: armor, helmet and shield only), and never put weapon…

Scaled Summons & Animal Companions

Your summoned creatures and animal companion grow with you. The moment one appears it gains a single permanent, undispellable boost based on your investment as a summoner — so a high-level druid's or ranger's pet stays…

Other Spell Changes

Healing Circle and both Bigby's hands are under review and may change.

Attack Bonuses from Spells Stack

In stock NWN, attack bonuses from spells and effects don't add up: the game keeps only the single largest one. A permanent +5 from a feat would make a +2 from War Cry worth nothing at all.

Your Companions' Area Spells Don't Hit You

This server runs on Hardcore rules, where area spells hurt everyone in the blast, including your friends. A companion's Hellball could flatten the player who summoned it.

Soul-fatigue on Heal

Healing is a timed resource, not a button you hold. Being healed by one of the three full-restore spells — Heal, Mass Heal or Greater Restoration, including from Heal potions and any item that casts them — leaves a…

Doubled Spell & Effect Duration

Every temporary effect you or your companions create lasts twice as long as stock NWN — buffs you cast, potions and scrolls you drink, debuffs you inflict on enemies, and buffs from your henchmen, summons and familiars.…

Character Progression

Predictable hit points and an extended level ceiling past the normal cap of 40.

Maximum Hit Points on Level-Up

Every character gains maximum hit points on every level-up, server-wide — no hit-die roll, no bad rolls. Your HP per level is always the top of your class hit die plus Constitution. (Set at module load via the…

Maximum Ability Score Bonus from Items

The stock NWN cap on ability score bonuses from items and effects is +12. This server raises it to +24, allowing high-end gear and buffs to reach higher stat totals without hitting an invisible wall. (Set via…

Maximum Attack Bonus: +40

Stock NWN caps the attack bonus you can get from gear, spells and effects combined at +20. Anything past that is silently thrown away. This server raises the cap to +40, so a heavily enchanted weapon no longer cancels…

Up to Four Classes

Stock NWN allows a character at most three classes. Here you can take four, and there is no multiclass XP penalty for doing so (below).

No Multiclass XP Penalty

Stock NWN quietly taxes multiclass characters: if your highest and lowest class levels ever differ by more than one, XP you earn is reduced until you level the lagging class back up. This server disables that penalty…

Kill XP — How Much a Creature Is Worth

Experience from a kill depends on two things: the creature's Challenge Rating (CR) and your own level. Every character level raises the CR you need to fight for a full payout, so content you farmed happily at one level…

Legendary Levels: 41–60

In development for Season 2. Levels 41–60 are being rebuilt as real character levels. The experience table below is final and already in the build; the level-cap lift and the per-class feat allotments are still being…

— Caster feats at legendary levels

The same level-40 blind spot that ate the spell picker also ate most of a caster's feat list. Once you had 41 or more levels in a casting class, every feat that requires you to be able to cast spells of a certain level…

Monk Weapons

Three weapons have been reclassified for monks relative to stock NWN:

Critical Hits & Devastating Critical

A devastating critical no longer kills outright. The stock save-or-die is gone — for melee weapons, ranged weapons, and unarmed and creature attacks alike. In its place, a devastating critical lands as a very large hit…

Combat

Small changes to the rules of a fight. Critical hits and Devastating Critical are under Character Progression.

Combat Modes Stay On

In stock NWN, Power Attack, Expertise, Rapid Shot, Flurry of Blows and the other combat modes switch themselves off when a fight ends, so you have to turn them back on every time. Here they stay on until you turn them…

Disarmed Weapons Go to Your Pack

When a monster disarms you, your weapon goes into your inventory instead of onto the ground. On the ground it could vanish when the area resets, or the monster could pick it up. Grab it and re-equip it.

Legendary Feats

Extra feats you choose at level 60, on top of the normal level-60 feat. This page lists every legendary feat currently in the game.

How you get them

When you reach level 60, a Legendary Feats window opens a few seconds after the level-up finishes. How many you may choose depends on your classes:

Ability Score Feats

Raises your base score permanently. It is not a buff, so it does not count against the item ability-bonus cap.

Also: Legendary Strength · Legendary Dexterity · Legendary Constitution · Legendary Intelligence · Legendary Wisdom · Legendary Charisma

Death, Dying & Respawn

A bleed-out window when you drop, and a light respawn penalty with no XP loss.

Bleeding Out

When you fall to 0 HP or below you begin bleeding rather than dying instantly. You lose 1 HP every round (6 seconds) and die at −20 HP (twice the vanilla −10 threshold), giving allies a longer window to reach you. Each…

You Cannot Log Out of Death

Logging out and back in does not restore health or spells — and it does not escape death. If you disconnect while dead or bleeding, you are still dead or bleeding when you return; your state is saved across the logout…

Respawn Penalty

Pressing the respawn button returns you to your bind point with:

Not Changed (Stock Standard)

Things that are commonly house-ruled on other servers but are left exactly as the base ruleset defines them here. If you have played elsewhere, do not assume these are altered.

Server Settings

These are standard NWN options, not house rules, but they shape how play feels here:

Rules Left at Stock

Rules Left at Stock True Seeing Works exactly as written — penetrates all illusions and invisibility. No nerfs. Stealth / Hide Standard mechanics. No custom detection bonuses or penalties beyond what the ruleset…
