Caster Signature Gear

A planned line of boss-drop gear that boosts specific spells — built to give Clerics, Druids, Sorcerers, and Wizards a real way to threaten high-tier bosses instead of falling back on damage shields, IGMS, and lucky epic-spell rolls. Each piece pairs strong conventional stats with one signature effect that amplifies, retypes, or supercharges a handful of that class's spells (or its summons).

Mostly design preview. This page is the design catalogue for an in-progress feature. Every row carrying a Draft badge is a starting point — names, numbers, and drop sources may change before (or during) implementation, and those pieces do not exist in game yet.

Rows badged Built are real blueprints that exist in the module today. They are not obtainable yet: where each one drops has not been decided, so none of them has been placed on a boss or in a container.

Shipped so far: the four Damage Retyper amulets (one per caster class)

The first slice of this system to be built is the archetype that answers the original complaint head-on — the spells you save for a boss are the ones bosses are immune to. Each of the four amulets below takes one signature save-or-die spell and, while worn, turns it from a command to die (which the great things of the world simply ignore) into real damage of a type they have to survive:

  • Reliquary of the Unmaking — Cleric — Implosion deals divine damage instead of death.
  • Heartwood of the Blighted Grove — Druid — Finger of Death deals negative damage instead of death.
  • Sorrow of the Nine — Sorcerer — Wail of the Banshee deals negative damage instead of death.
  • Dreamshard of Dol Guldur — Wizard — Weird deals magical damage instead of death, and no longer cares whether the target has a mind to terrify.

The rules are the same for all four. The amulet is worn at the neck — the one dedicated slot for this whole system, so only ever one retype can be active and a second amulet in your pack does nothing. Damage is one die per caster level (d6, or d8 for the single-target Finger of Death), capped at 40 dice and at 300 damage per target (400 for Finger of Death). Metamagic still applies. Spell resistance is still checked. The target still gets a Fortitude save — but now it is an ordinary spell save for half damage, not the death save that immune creatures pass automatically. An amulet worn by someone with no levels in its class stays inert.

Overview

Twenty items — five per caster class — each looted from a thematically matched boss already in the world (no new areas required). Every item does two things:

  • Conventional stats at or just above the current obtainable ceiling — a stated number of bonus spell slots (up to level 9) for the class, plus a large bonus to its casting ability, scaled to the tier of the boss that drops it.
  • A signature spell effect — the reason to chase the item — that keys off the actual spell you cast.

The Pure-Caster Bonus

Every item rewards single-class devotion with a stronger effect.

A pure caster — a character whose every level is in one spellcasting class (Cleric, Druid, Sorcerer, or Wizard), with no multiclass or prestige-class dip — gets an upgraded version of each item's signature effect: bigger dice, a higher amplification, or an outright spell upgrade. This deliberately hands undiluted casters the boss-killing tools that multiclass "splash" builds don't need, and gives a concrete reason to commit to a class.

In the tables below, the base effect applies to any character who can wear and cast from the item; the pure-caster upgrade is called out in the same cell. Amplification percentages are applied after metamagic, so a +50% boost stacks with Empower and Maximize rather than replacing them.

The Four Effects

  • Amplify — a percentage or flat boost to a named spell's or school's damage.
  • Retype — changes a spell's damage to a type the target isn't immune to, using existing damage types only (e.g. Implosion's death effect becomes divine damage). No new damage type is invented.
  • Summon boost — extends scaled summons: your companions and summoned creatures gain attack, damage, and attacks-per-round so they matter against high-CR bosses (DPS, not tankiness).
  • Focus — raises save DC and/or caster level for a school so save-based and SR-gated spells actually land on tough targets.

Tiers & Balance

How stat weight is set, and how these stay legal.

An item's conventional stats scale to the challenge rating of the boss that drops it. The bonus-spell-slot count listed for each item is on top of what the class already prepares, and every item's tier is shown as a badge in its row:

  • Accessible — from mid-tier bosses: +6 casting stat, ~5 bonus spell slots.
  • Mid — from strong bosses: +6/+7 stat, SR 20, ~6 slots.
  • Premium — from marquee bosses (Smaug, Gandalf, the Witch King, the Underlord): +8 stat, SR 22, 6–8 slots, Regen 3.

The signature spell effect — not the raw stat line — is meant to be the reason to chase each item. The stats keep the piece competitive to equip; the effect is what lets the class finally threaten a boss it couldn't touch before.

Legality. These items sit above the player-forge value ceiling (like the existing Belt of Sorcerery), so they are hand-placed boss loot registered on the module's legal-item whitelist — they will never flag you for contraband, but they also can't be reproduced at the Forge of Wonders.

Retype. Wail of the Banshee deals negative damage instead of death: 1d6 negative / caster level (max 40 dice, 300 per target), Fortitude save for half, reaching up to caster-level targets as the spell normally does. Weird moved to the Wizard amulet so every class gets its own retyper. +6 Cha. Bonus slots / SR still draft — the final stat line is set when the drop source is. Retype. Weird deals magical damage instead of death: 1d6 magical / caster level (max 40 dice, 300 per target), Fortitude save for half. It also drops the spell's mind-affecting gate, which is the other half of why Weird does nothing to bosses today. +6 Int. Bonus slots still draft — the final stat line is set when the drop source is. Not decided yet — the item exists but is not placed anywhere.

Retype + focus. Finger of Death & Circle of Death deal magical instead of death (1d6 / CL), +2 Necromancy DC. Pure: 1d8 / CL, +4 Necromancy DC.
